Animals in the Attic

Can You Hear Animals in Your Attic?

Raccoon in AtticAre you really hearing things, or is it your imagination?

If you think you are hearing, scampering, digging or even vocal noises somewhere above your ceiling, you probably are. You most likely have critters living in your attic.

So you ask yourself “How much damage can a cute little squirrel or snake do? Snake?!? Yes, even snakes have been known to make a home in someone’s attic. The damage can be considerable.

Who could be living in your attic?

  • Birds – Birds find their way into your attic through cracks, holes and unprotected ventilation openings. Once they have started nesting there, they will return year after year unless you make your attic unavailable to them. Once you hear them you should take steps to close the openings before they can lay their eggs and hatch their young. Not only do their droppings cause disease, but they make a terrible mess on the side of your home.
  • Squirrels – Though they are “cuter” than mice or rats, squirrels are also rodents. And along with their counterparts, they are professional chewers. They will chew their way through wood and electrical wires. Like birds, once squirrels start nesting in your attic, they will return year after year. To keep them out of your attic they need to be caught and relocated.
  • Bats can live in your atticBats – Bats can be a real problem. They tend to roost in colonies, and though the prefer a nice cave, your warm cozy attic is a great trade off. Most of these colonies are made up predominantly of females that give birth every summer, thus the size of the colony doubles every year. Bats can enter your attic through small cracks. To rid your attic of bats, they must be removed.
  • Snakes – Snakes also enter your house through very small openings. If you have snakes in your attic, you probably have a double problem, because where there are snakes, there are probably rodents. They follow the food source. So the best way to get rid of snakes, is to get rid of the rodents.
  • Possums and Raccoons – Both of these large animals can and do find their way into attics. Both are very good climbers and need a fairly large opening to get in. Both leave  big messes behind. Both must be trapped to get rid of them.

  • Mice and Rats – Both of these love attics. To rid your attic of them you need to seal up their point of entrance, and once that’s done, they need to be trapped and removed.

Animals in the attic need to be dealt with as soon as you are aware they are there. Not only do they spread disease, but they can do a lot of damage from gnawing through wood, to gnawing through electrical wiring, to gnawing through PVC piping.
