Attic Insulation

Is Your Attic Insulated Adequately?

UninsulatedAttic-MasterCraftRoofingDo you have rooms in your home that are too hot or too cold?

Are your utility bills too high?

Then your next question should be, is your attic insulated adequately?

Most people don’t realize the importance their attic and it’s ventilation and insulation are to the overall health and comfort of their home. In a poorly insulated house in the summer, the hot air easily goes from outside to inside, and in the winter, the warm air you want to keep inside easily escapes through the ceiling. This makes your rooms uncomfortable and your utility bills soar. (This means you are losing money!)

These aren’t the only signs of inadequate insulation:

Inside your home:

  • You may feel cold drafts in certain rooms, that you can’t always pinpoint where they are coming from.
  • You may have recessed “can” lights that are placed in the ceiling, exactly below the attic

In the attic you may notice:

  • Your insulation is less than 16 inches deep.
  • The joists and/or ductwork are visible, meaning they are not adequately covered in insulation.

How well is your attic insulated?

InsulationDepth-MasterCraftRoofingHave you ever gone into your attic and measured the depth or thickness of your insulation? The U.S. Department of Energy recommends that homes in the northern part of the United States have between 16 and 18 inches for adequately insulated attics. As simple of a guideline as that is, you would be amazed at how many homes do not meet that standard.

You also need to understand the “R-Value” of your insulation to know how well protected your home is. The R-Value is how well your insulation resists heat flow. The R-Value is measured in numbers, and the higher the number, the better the thermal performance is. If you live in the Pacific Northwest, and have a wood-framed home, the R-Value of your attic should be about R38 to R60, as recommended by Energy Star.

While you’re in the attic, you should also check for the condition of the insulation, you should check to see if:

  • It’s been degraded by leaks or moisture from condensation and is mildewy or moldy
  • If there are signs of resident rodents who have pulled pieces of insulation out for nesting
  • If there are areas where the insulation appears compacted or compressed
  • If it contains asbestos
